This week at Yellow Door we said goodbye to two wonderful young men!
Amarian and his foster mom stayed with us at Rosie’s Place for 3 weeks while he recovered from a kidney transplant. His brother and dad visited on weekends from Forest, VA .
As mom tells his story…”Amarian was found to have non-functioning kidneys at age 5, which turned out to be end stage renal disease. When his 89 year-old aunt was unable to care for him, he was put in my care (I’m a registered nurse) We’ve been together 3 years, and during that time he’s been able to abide by his diet, learn his meds and how to take them, and through hard work get his body well enough to be put on the transplant list! Thanks to Yellow Door, we were able to transition smoothly after the transplant, which has helped with the numerous doctor’s appointments and unexpected hospital stays. AND we taught his great Aunt how to care for him, so he can spend time with her on weekends.”
Jaylen and his dad were with us at the Baer Hart apartment for 6 months, while he underwent chemo and radiation treatment for Nasopharyngeal carcinoma – a type of cancer rarely seen in young teens. His Aunt and siblings visited frequently from their home in Martinsville, VA to provide support. As Jaylen’s dad tells it ” we went to 3 different hospitals to find out what was wrong with my son until we found UVA Children’s.
We were so far away and would have had to travel daily to get the care my son needed.
Thankfully, The Yellow Door Foundation reached out to assist us with this hardship and free us of added stress with an amazing place to stay.”
