If These Walls Could Talk

Baer-Hart House

Our first Apartment Home opened in February 2018

Former Board Director, Greg Baer, and his wife, Clare Hart believed in JoAnne’s vision for the Yellow Door Foundation and were the first to sponsor a Yellow Door Apartment.  “Families who are caring for a seriously ill child feel vulnerable.  Having the Yellow Door apartments removes so much stress, allowing caregivers to focus on their child.  This made our commitment to sponsor one of the apartments an easy decision,” shares Clare Hart.

Baer-Hart underwent a face-lift in 2024 to update cabinetry, furnishings and new paint.  Since opening its doors, the Baer-Hart House, a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment, has served as a respite to 30 families. Some of our longest lodgers have stayed here as it has been the home to many of our cancer patients requiring longer stays.   For all its lodgers, the Baer-Hart House is a quiet and cozy space for families offering comfort as they heal together.

Ryder

Ryder was born in December 2025 with a condition called Hypoplastic left heart syndrome.    He is from the Roanoke area and we discovered his dad was the one who built our UVA basketball bench in 2020 for our fundriasing raffle we had during Covid.  We were so happy to be able to help this family.

Ryder is the first born child and his parents stayed comfortably in Baer-Hart House until Ryder was strong enough to go home.
