Meet Alex

After going into congestive heart failure, Alex came to UVA to get an LVAD.

We welcomed Alex, dad and grandmom to Fox Hollow in July 2023.   Alex came to UVA to have a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) surgically implanted.  An LVAD is a pump used for patients who have reached end stage heart failure.  Alex will most likely require a heart transplant in the near future.

Alex had this to share: “My name is Alex.  I am 15.  I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in March at Children’s Hospital King’s Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, VA.  In June I came to UVA where I got an LVAD. They say I am the first pediatric patient to go home on the LVAD. That made me feel really special. My family and I had to learn a lot about the LVAD before I could be discharged from the hospital.

Now we are staying at The Yellow Door. It’s funny because the apartment we are staying in is called “The Fox Hollow” and it has pictures and little figures of foxes.  I happen to love foxes!  Now I’m working to get better so I can go to a concert of my favorite band ‘Ghost’ in August.”
