In Memoriam: Amara

Amara needed a heart transplant after two heart procedures were unsuccessful.

In August 2022 we welcomed 10-month-old Amara and her parents, from Portsmouth Virginia, to our Rosie’s Place apartment.

Who could forget those pigtails?

In loving memory of sweet Amara, who graced Yellow Door with her presence in July 2022, residing in Rosie’s Place with her mom during the crucial months of her heart transplant surgery and follow-up. For four months, Amara’s courage and resilience shone brightly.

Amidst the challenges, a sudden turn of events took everyone by surprise. Despite initially doing well, Amara began facing health struggles, particularly with eating. By the time the underlying issue was identified, a relentless virus had taken control of her intestine.

On November 15, Amara was brought to UVA Health Children’s, but despite the efforts of the medical team, there was little that could be done, and Amara peacefully passed away on November 18. Her mom, amidst the grief, wanted to express eternal gratitude to the Yellow Door Donor Community for the unwavering support provided during her time in Charlottesville for her heart transplant.

In honoring Amara’s memory, let us remember her as a symbol of strength, and let her legacy be a reminder of the importance of compassion and support during challenging times.
