In Memoriam:  Atticus

Atticus was diagnosed and treated for a brain tumor that came back before coming to UVA.

Three-year-old Atticus, his one-year-old brother, Zaxton, and parents came to stay at VOGA Apartment.

In late October 2023, we welcomed little Atticus, a courageous 3-year-old, to Yellow Door as he battled brain cancer.  Atticus had health issues from birth and additionally was fighting cancer for the past year. Hailing from Winchester, VA, Atticus, along with his dad and younger brother Zaxton, found solace in our VOGA Apartment. Meanwhile, Mom tirelessly worked double shifts at home, making visits to Charlottesville whenever possible.

As December unfolded, Atticus’s medical journey took a challenging turn, and palliative care became a crucial part of his treatment plan. Faced with the heartbreaking reality of their situation, friends of Yellow Door rallied together, extending not just emotional support but also financial assistance. This generous gesture allowed Mom to make the heart-wrenching decision to leave her job and join Atticus in Charlottesville, ensuring that she could be by his side during this difficult time, spending as much time as possible with him.

Amidst the trials, the family found a silver lining. Christmas at Yellow Door became a poignant celebration, where they could bask in the warmth and comfort of our apartment, creating cherished family memories. We are profoundly humbled to have provided this family with a respite, offering a welcoming haven for them to be together during a time that demanded both strength and solace.
