Meet Charlotte

At nine days-old, Charlotte began struggling.  She went to UVA Children’s for surgery to repair two heart defects.

Charlotte was born on August 14 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, VA and seemed to be a perfectly healthy baby girl.

However, nine days later Mom noticed that Charlotte was very lethargic, cold, and was pallor. She called 911 and in the meantime CPR was started in order to allow Charlotte’s heart to continue beating and provide extra breathing support.

Charlotte, was taken to a nearby ER where the medical team got Charlotte stabilized and from there she was transported to UVA Children’s. Once at UVA, the cardiology team found that Charlotte had two congenital heart defects that explained the events of that day.

She was diagnosed with Coarctation of Aorta, a narrowing of the large blood vessel (aorta) that leads from the heart, and Ventricular Septal Defect.  She had surgery at UVA on September 13 and her surgeon was able to successfully repair both defects.

While Charlotte was monitored at UVA Children’s, her parents stayed at the VOGA House to be close by. The family was able to return home on October 4, 2021.
