Meet Eliza

Eliza came to Yellow Door in 2019 with her biggest supporter, big brother Carter!

Two-year-old Eliza was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2019 shortly after her parents learned they were having a third child. The Detweiler family was traveling to Charlottesville multiple times a week from Lynchburg for Eliza’s treatments.  “A lot of times after she gets her chemo treatments, she’s sick and so it’s about an hour, 20-minute drive for us, so even that hour, 20-minute drive to Lynchburg, sitting in a car seat is hard for her,” Brittney said.

In September the family, including big brother Carter, moved into the Baer-Hart House while Eliza bravely underwent 30 weeks of treatment.  They were able to have a family Thanksgiving dinner, enjoy a visit from Santa, spend time with the Frozen princesses, and finally welcome little brother Graham before heading home to Lynchburg.

*This is Princess Eliza on her 5th Birthday. Still cancer-free and as cute as ever!

“Being able to stay at a Yellow Door apartment for the last 30 weeks has been so helpful to us and has lifted such a burden off our shoulders.  We will be forever grateful to the Yellow Door Foundation and all you have done for us.”

Update on Eliza

Latest scans show Eliza is cancer free!  She recently had her dream come true when she got to meet the Disney Princesses in Disney World.  Eliza’s parents surprised the kids with a trip in April 2021.  Her favorite part was getting to visit Cinderella’s Castle, but eating at the The Beast’s Castle was a close second.  Big Brother Carter preferred Star Wars Land in Hollywood Studios saying he felt like “he was in the movie!”  We are so happy for this sweet little girl and her beautiful family!
