Ryder’s Story

Before Ryder was even born, he faced incredible odds. Diagnosed in utero with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), his parents came to Charlottesville knowing he would need open-heart surgery shortly after birth. They expected a difficult few weeks in the hospital, followed by a period of recovery at Yellow Door before returning home.

Instead, their journey became one of unwavering faith, resilience, and unconditional love.

Over the next six months, Ryder endured complication after complication. His dedicated medical team at UVA Health fought tirelessly alongside him, doing everything possible to save his precious life. Through every procedure, every setback, and every difficult day, Ryder continued to shine with a smile that brought joy to everyone around him.

As his mother so beautifully shared, “Regardless of his situation, the tests, the rough days, he remained the happiest baby, who loved everyone.”

Sadly, Ryder’s tiny body could no longer withstand the constant battle, and last week he passed peacefully in the loving arms of his family.

His time on earth was far too short, but his impact was immeasurable. Ryder reminded us all what courage, joy, and unconditional love look like.

We are deeply honored to have been a small part of Ryder’s journey and to have walked alongside his family during these past seven months.
